Testing
I think it is important to have the students either take an assessemnt or just quiz them on the objectives at the beginning of the course to see who knows what and which direction the instructor should go.
Hi Casey,
I agree with your point about the importance of conducting a pretest. This gives the instructor an indication of the range of skill/knowledge levels of the class, which serves as a guideline for planning the pace of the class. There needs to be a fair balance of learning activities for all levels so that they get the most out of the class.
I agree with pretesting but not necessarily on course content. I like to pretest on vocabulary words so I can adjust my lectures for students to understand at their level.
Yes, some times we have to go over these topics to ensure the students understand its meaning.
Pre-testing gives me as a instructor a good assessment of my students and their knowlege level and helps me plan my course to best help the students learning curves.
Testing can come in different forms. pre test gives the instructor an idea of how much the students know about the course prior to the commencement of the course. This can alter the pace and the content of the lesson plan.Pop-quzzies give the instructor a feed back on how the students are doing.
Testing is a great tool for checking the students understanding. I do a lo of pop quizes to see if they are getting the material. I do Pre tests to see if thay have learned the lesson
I can definitely relate to that. Having stagger students at one time can be dificult for the students that might have aquired a skill that a new student has not been exposed to yet. I have implemented peer tutoring within my class to keep from overwhelming the new students, and to strenghten the knowledge of the returning students.

I use the pretesting system as well. At the end of the course, I give them a post test. The students and I are always pleased to see the vast improvement they have made.
I agree. This help the instructor to know which students are weak in certain areas.
I agree. But we must be careful to not dumb down our lesson to accommodate one student while bogging down another.
John,
In addition, pretesting can serve as a reminder that they should review previously learned material, prior to starting the next course in the sequence. I always remind students that they should not "throw away" the knowledge that they have gained in previous courses.

I agree. Pretesting student about their level of understanding for the course material is very important. It helps them to know where they are and how seriously the incoming topics are to be taken.
olaolu,
I agree. In all cases pretesting should not be graded, because it should solely be used to assess the student's knowledge and grasp of the subject. Attaching a grade to it, would make it "counterproductive".

Raquel,
I agree. In addition, it is imperative that the instructor provides their students with "thought-provoking" questions, that can be used to adequately assess the student's preparedness for the course.

I totally agree with this concept. you don't realize how much more they need to get started.
