Measuring Objectives

Measuring Objectives
Objectives are a list of knowledge that the student should be able to complete at the end of the class. The objectives have to be able to be measured in a way to see if the student has an understanding of the objective. The objective could be measured in demonstration, where the student would have to physically demonstrate a procedure like assembling a car engine. The objective could also be measured by the student taking a test.

By utilizing both didactics and tactile skills , the student and teacher can focus on where there strengths are and there weaknesses are.

I agree. I teach Dental Assisting and believe both written and hands are best utilized together.

I teach the didactic clinical seminar and the hands on clinical course. The two courses are inter-related. The therory course is measured more through taking a written test, while the clinical portion is measured more through demonstration and application of knowledge.

Another idea is having students come up to the white board and fill in blanks for anatomical diagrams and/or for medical terminology words..they seem to enjoy this interactive activity much more than lecturing or quizzes.

I'm a massage therapy instructor so in order to measure the students knowledge they are given quizzes and tests as well as hands on applications, which works out well. The quizzes/tests allow me to see if the understand the concept and hands on test show me that they know how to apply their knowledge.

I like to have my students take a written quiz and I also like to have them give individual demonstrations in class to ensure that they truly understand the material.

Hello Kaylee,

I also like to combined methods by having my students demonstrate what they have learned. They're different types of learners and this would help for those that are hands-on learners. I am the same way, I actually have to do it myself in oder to understand what I just learned. I usually follow up with a written exam or sometimes I like to hold class discussions and bring up particular topics for the class to discuss as a whole.

When I am measuring objectives I like to combine both methods by first having my students demonstrate what they have learned as a review then following with a written exam to measure what they retained.
