Students do listen to guest speakers because they related the information in a different way using information the students have learned. This makes the students feel that they have acheived something. I find it hard however, to find guest speakers. Any ideas?
I totally agree. Students seem to pay close attention to a guest speaker because they can learn about what really goes on.
I totally agree. I think students see a guest speaker as someone who is actually working in the field that they are studying, whereas; they sometimes are too familiar with an instructor and cannot see that the instrutor also has work experience in that field.
Guest speaker's are awesome, student's really seem to tune in to what they are saying, as they are speaking of the real world, what happens after school
I agree. I think part of that is my fault in not having a prepared plan. Not giving them some objectives so they don't wander off topic. Making sure it's relevant before they start it. I need better communication with them and structure. Maybe a lesson plan.
I agree, guest speakers give a more valued, higher level of acceptance. It is nice when a physician backs up what you have been teaching them all along. Students also value when other previous students share their real life stories.
I always invite my students that has began to work in the field to return and be a guest speaker to my class. It motivates the current students
I try to schedule former students as guest speakers. The current students seem eager to hear what the '"real world" is like from a peer prospective. Somehow hearing this information from someone other than the instructor seems to carry more weight even though we might be saying the exact same thing!
Guest speakers are a wonderfull resource which students seem to listen to and interact with.In D.H. also guest speakers have a lot of "real world" experience and stories they can tell.
Once they hear the guest speaker tell them what you have been telling them for some reason now it holds value to them.
Agree guest speakers can bring a new light and energy to the classroom
I have had a great deal of benifit from guest speakers. It is unfortunatly, not always well received from the students. It's a nice break in the routien but content can be unreliable.
I second that! Guest speakers are a great way for the students to experience real world applications from someone other than an Instructor (even though most instructors including myself are in the field every day). Recently I had a panel of professionals visit my class and all of the nuggets that they shared with my class couldn't even be compiled in a book. It also gave my students an opportunity to ask questions about the field and get a different perspective.
Also,I have found that students listen to guest speakers and remember what they say. A teacher can say the same thing, but when you bring in a speaker as an expert - what they say seems more valuable to the students.
I agree. Our students also like field trips which allows them to see workers in action. If they can get a look at actual procedures being performed, they can also determine if they have chosen a field that suits them.
I think guest speakers are a great way to give the students a different look at things also. The instructor can constantly teach the student over and over, but once you get a guest speaker who may be in that field or an expert also in that field to come in and speak to the students or to teach them certain aspects of the course, they take something different away from it. The students really seem to enjoy guest speakers.
It also gives students a real world perspective of the career they have chosen..
