Improving lectures with critical thinking
I find that a good way to motivate students during lectures is to ask questions. If you ask students if something is right or wrong, you wil get a response and, usually, discussion. But the instuctor must control the discussion si that opinoins don't move too far away from the the lecture main points. And sometimes a dominatant student may be just plain wrong. How do you liven up a lecture?
Hi RoQuanda,
I agree! Our students need to learn how to think critically and out of the box so that they can become better with problem solving.

In the medical profession, critical thinking is very important. Students need to learn how to effectively think and rationale situations. As a teacher, throughout my lecture I ask questions that makes the students stop and think. Sometimes I actually have to say “STOP and thinkâ€. Teaching critical thinking skills is a very important component in today classroom.
Hi Homer,
Speakers should choose their words carefully so that it is a good match for their speech, and they can get their point(s) across.

Patricia,
Indeed visuals help but you need to be careful with words. I often see speakers using slides with words that don't match well with their speech. This confuses me and I end up not assimiliating either the lecture or slides. Photos work very well as they stimulate imagination and, I suspect, non-speech oriented areas of the brain.

Hi Homer,
Use various teaching methods to make the lecture interesting. Students love seeing visuals doing lecture time as well as demonstrations.
