critical thinking benefits
it helps students to get involved in class materials and enhance quick retention of medical information, keeps memory active.
Hi Irwin,
Great points made! These are awesome activities to promote critical thinking. I like to do role playing, scenarios, and mock learning to generate critical thinking.

Hello Patricia,
I think for students to effectively engage in critical thinking, they must first be aware of what they should expect as a result of thinking critically. Students may be made aware of the four stages of cognitive development, which align nicely with critical thinking. They are:
1. Absolute knowing: the student simply memorizes facts.
2. Transitional knowing: the student is able to form opinions about the facts that they have learned.
3. Independent knowing: the student gains a deep understanding of how different procedures apply in various contexts.
4. Contextual knowing: the student understand why he/she holds certain beliefs and why others may have their own beliefs.
In order for a student to advance through these stages guided activities can be helpful. These may include: brainstorming activities, group discussions or debates, case studies, summaries or critiques of articles or chapters in a text, or simply keeping a reflective journal.
Not all critical thinking activities need to be done in class. Some can be part of assignments or projects.
I hope this helps!
Irwin
Hi Patricia,
You can come up with various scenarios that involve coding and how the students utilize their critical thinking that way.

Hi John,
I agree! Students hold onto the information better when they have to think about what they are doing.

I teach medical coding, which is already active learning. But sometimes I struggle with how to get them to use critical thinking.
Critical thinking makes students smarter and brings out the best in them.It also enables them to understand and retain the subject better.
Hi Motaz,
Retention of material is very important. We have to help our students to become better thinkers so that information is kept.
