Board Games

I find board games to be an excellent source of active learning in the classroom.

Hi Mark,
Competetion is a good thing when it comes to education. Competing to be a better student produces higher grades.

Jeopardy is used in some courses at our campus as well. Its a big hit with all ages of students from late teens to mature adults. I split the classroom up into teams to give more competition.

Hi Shannie,
Jeopardy is a winner! Students love it because it is fun!

I have often heard of other instructors using Jeopardy for review. I think I even have one term's review in the filing cabinet in my office, left over from some previous instructor or director. From the thread here, it seems to be a popular tool, and effective as well. Maybe it's time to dig that out and transfer it to PowerPoint so I can use it. It's nice that some of the work is already done for me.

Thanks for all of the advice!!

Hi MICHAEL,
Great mixture having fun while learning! Students retain more when learning is made fun!

I to use Jeopardy in review for quizes and exams the students get alot out of it and the test scores show.

Hi Debbie Kay,
I love the incentive (candy, especially larger candy). I am sure the students love the incentive as well. Students will work harder if there is a prize involved.

I have had great success with Jeopardy and Bingo. Both games can be expanded in to more in-depth discussion and uproarious competition between teams. I also incorporate questions/answers in which the correct answers are rewarded with a token candy--as the questions get harder; the candy is larger.

Hi Allison,
Fantastic! Games have proven to be an excellent way for students to retain information.

I use jeopardy, board races, password, and bingo alot for everything from simple reviews to studying for their certification exams.

Hi Said,
When we think game, we automatically think fun. The perfect mesh is to mix fun with learning. Students love it!

I agree about using games in the classroom. I find that to be very helpful in the kitchen with certain, specific applications.

Hi Dale,
Students enjoy learning with games. They especially like winning if a prize is involved.

You can motivate students with a token economy, too. I use games as review and create 2 teams, some reward (pizza?) for the winning team (they always share with the other students, anyway.)

Hi Cole,
Jeporady is an awesome game to use as a learning tool. I use a Jeporady template for a lot of my classes for exam reviews.

sometimes i like to make a jeapordy game that makes them get involved, and it helps them review for exams.
