Having a student step up and act as a teacher may be a good demonstration but what happens when the student does something incorrect?

Hi Michael,
Some students really make excellent teachers. They have a natural knack for presenting and reaching others. Peer learning is a good practice when guided by the instructor.

The student as the teacher is an effective method. The student may enjoy the challemge if properly supported.
|Have the students define the areas and style of teacheing.
For some a lecture would not be as fun as a demonstration.
It also gives insite as to the style of learning that a student prefers.

Hi Alexadner,
Students tend to feel very comfortable when they learn from their peers, however students teaching students needs to be monitored extremely closely by the instructor because utimately it is the instructor's job to teach the students.

As an instructor, students teaching students is a very effective way for them to learn. Sometimes students are hesitant to ask instructors for help as they do not want to ask what they call dumb questions. When you allow the student to set the homework or teach on a certain topic it allows them to dig deeper into what they really need to learn.

Hi James,
Awesome! I love the ideas of the instrutor presenting first, explicit directions are given, and documentation is provided to reference. Students can do it, sometimes we just have to ease the fear.

We use students as teachers on a regular basis. We often have them prepare a handout for the class or a powerpoint to accompany the presentation. Many students are, of course, scared to death at the beginning. Clear direction has been the proven solution. We provide them with a detailed outline to follow, and the instructor conducts the first presentation or two in the same format as an example. This alleviates their fears about content and allows them to focus more on the implications and relevance of the material.

Hi Tim,
It is amazing the information students can share with others to get them to a level of understanding. Sometimes students understand it quicker and better when they learn from their peers.
