Hi Linda,
Awesome! This is real learning at its best. These are the types of things students will encounter on the job. What a great way to add change to the class as well.

I teach medical coding to medical assistants. I have them create their own coding scenario using a real life situation from their past. They need to use 2 CPT codes, 3 ICD-9 codes and one modifier. They then get in front of the class and the students have to look up the codes as the story is read.
Hi Mary,
As MAs our students must know how to think out of the box so that their patients are taken care of. Anytime we can give our students scenarios as to what they will encounter in the medical facility, we should, because this prepares them for the real world.

Hi Matthew,
Awesome! You give your students situations that they may possibly encounter, and you are certainly getting them ready for the work force. We need to prepare our students for the real world as much as possible.

Critical thinking skills are imperative for success in the medical field. I constantly try to reinforce this in my students (MA students). We analyse how to bring in information given to us by our patients and use critical thinking skills to write chief complaints and solve problems.
Hi Patricia and everyone else! How are you doing? I involve the students in critical thinking in the pharmaceutical setting. There are many scenarios that we go over; anything from angry customers, miscalculations, insurance fraud, drug seekers, and pharmacy robbery. We also touch on ethics. We talk about what to do or what to believe in certain situations. It is fun to bring up because there is no right or wrong answer. The students have to think critically through the problem because it is what they believe to be true, partially true, partially false, or false. Getting them to think ahead of time may lead to better outcomes if and when they face certain dilemmas in the pharmacy.
Hi Clair,
Students love being involved and sharing information that is applicable to the course content/lesson. It is amazing the quality of work students produce when they are in a group.

I like have the class work in a groups on projects. Whether the project is large or small, this helps them apply the items they learn from the course. Alsa for many topics, have the class talk about current events that apply to the topics dicsussed, get the students involved and help them lead the discussion, but does not require them to get up in front of the class.
Hi Maricar,
These are the type of things students need to encounter in class so that they will know how to handle various situations in the workplace.

I usually pick a patient that has actual issues like for example patient fell, I will give them question to come up with root cause of the fall, what interventions needed to prevent another fall etc. I will put them in pairs and discuss at post conference to the group
Hi, Randall. I think this is a good idea. We need all students to know we are noting their involvement. And I'd expect be a more alert and engaged if I knew the teacher might question me as part of watching my participation. Questions asked at the right level will make them think and they will find that they can do well in our course. In other words, challenging but not intimidating... Gary
Hi Philip,
When students can apply learning to every day life they tend to grasp the concept easier/better.

Hi Lisa,
Peer teaching is great! Students really can learn a lot from their peers. It will amaze you how creative students really are.

I teach anatomy and physiology. My students are asked to develope a teaching plan for a body system. They then have to teach it to the rest of the class.
Use personal anecdotes to try to understand what motivates characters in essays or short stories to do the actions they do.
Hi Mary,
Interesting, when learning is acted out! I am sure this is such an effective way of learning various defense mechanism.
Patricia Scales
Hi Denise,
Awesome! Students really do think hard with scenario learning. Scenario learning appears more real to students as these will be types of things they will encounter on the job.

For Mental Health Nursing, I have students form small groups and each group gets a Defense Mechanism which must be acted out in front of the class. The class then guesses which Defense Mechanism is being used.
I actively engage my vocational nursing students in scenarios in which they will have to critically think to perform optimally. By the time they get to my term, they have enough background to break situations down and implement the best nursing interventions. Critical thinking is essential to functioning as a nurse.
Hi Donnalyn,
Great visual to go along with the lesson. Students tend to learn more effectively when a visual is involved.
