Keep them thinking.

When a student asks a question I look at what they are asking and doing at the time. I then ask them a question about the subject in a different way to get them thinking on their own. I do this for several questions to see how they answer and then say "When you are out working and have a question think back to me and come up with another question to kick your own thoughts and with this I hope youo find your own answer".

It's a good strategy to help force students to think own their own. I'm sure most of us teaching today realize that a percentage of students don't like to think past a certain point. Unfortunately some will not even ask a question when their not sure of a particular method or procedure. I encourage students to ask questions and like you, I first try to get them to answer their own questions.
