Check and Balance

I am a firm believer in giving a pre and post test on the subject matter the very first day of the course.
This accomplishes a couple things. One would be where the class is from a knowledgeable standpoint and where you are as an instructor, from a teaching standpoint.
This helps give the class a clear objective on what type of material is going to be covered and what is expected from them.

I have begun using a pre-test on the first day to gauge the level of knowledge and help me develop a strategy for the class. I also use the same test on the last day of the course. This will help the students realize what they learned in the class. This has returned positive results.

Hi Brenda,
Good to hear about your good results with pretesting. I have used pretests for many years and they really help me to know where to start with each new class. I can also see growth as measured from the pretest to post testing.

I agree, I give a pretest to the class mainly so the students can see, and probably are suprised as to what they know about the field they have chosen
