Career development and conferences
Most continuing education and career enhancement workshops and conferences cost a great amount. Who is expected to pay registration fees, the attendee out of his/her pocket or the college? Bear in mnd that many instructors at career colleges are adjuncts and receive modest pay. Is there a standard for conference fee payments in the career college field?
Hi Robert,
Great to hear about the support you are getting from your colleges in helping with your professional development. They know you are interested in furthering your skills so they support you in these efforts.

I run into this at every College I teach at. I teach computer science, so I use online freebies ( web conferences), local club activities, and subscribe to many free technical magazines. Many times I can get into a conference free or at very low cost because the conference is new or is promoting themselves.
I also work with my chair person or the president of the small college to help them understand how what I learn can help the college. The standard is always local to the college, but at times they surprise me. If I am willing to sacrifice a little, they will match.
Hi Thomas,
Conference registration fees can vary based upon who is hosting them. There are many other ways of keeping current in your field besides attending these conferences if they are too expensive. Also, many career colleges pay for their faculty to attend as a part of their professional development plans. You should check with your college to see if they provide any support of this type.
