Yes, Dr. Gary. You right about the teaching technique have to do with the students, content and the college but also the instructor’s ATTITUDE reflect the style of the instuctor.
I may not have enough experience as an instructor but took me 2 weeks of teaching to figure out my class. I had some students who really want to learn and play a bigger game in life, some other are there just to socialize with others although it’s an adult learning course.
I Hope to figure out my next class in less than a week and master my teaching technique on time to keep the class in the most effective way.

Hi Manuela,
I wish you the best in your teaching and the taking of these courses. If I can be of any help to you during this time please let me know.
Gary

be open with students

I am not sure if anyone has included this answer, but I would suggest watching other Instructors teach. Being open minded to the way others teach and learning from others is a great way to refine and enhance your instructional style.
Why invent the wheel?

In order to provide students my best instructional style I need to be confident in my classroom. For me, this means staying informed on changes in the field I am teaching. Participating in on-going professional development and in-services is paramount to develping my instructional style.

I update my style on a regular basis. I read periodicals as well as online news streams. I try to find relevent and poignant topics that relate to our material.

Hi Dr. Meers,

The reason I have to complete a few of these teachers certificates right away is because my program needs them in before Jan. I am only doing one. I started teaching here and was going to school during the day, and it was impossible for me to complete this and all the other new things that had priority. I would rather take my time as well, but I will complete at least one and take my time with the othere.

Student surveys and feedback are techniques that work for me. Also it is matter of trial and error for me, being new to this field.

I agree. If you show students that you care - are patient and flexible with them - it goes a long way toward achieving a very high level learning environment - regardless of culture!

I teach technology and a huge component of this is staying on top of the latest, emerging technology. I attend numerous conferences and conventions, along with performing my own research and checking in with popular technology websites in order to keep my course curriculum current and accurate.

Hi Manuela,
You will find your style with a little experience. Once you have some experience under your belt and you have had exposure to different student dynamics you will find what works for both you and your students.
I wish you much success in your new teaching career. It is a profession because of the impact you have on the lives of people desiring to learn, enter and succeed in their career area.

Hi Latoya,
You are in a challenging situation as a result of your teaching load and the lack of support in terms of having a developed syllabus available. For your survival I would make sure to be organized, and know exactly in what sequence you want to cover the content for each course. This will show your students and the administration that you know what you are doing as an educator. Work on establishing rapport with your students. This will carry you far in gaining the respect of your students. This in turn will help you with the feedback from students and staff. You will be fine as you complete the 90 day period.

I am new at this. I have not yet developed a style. I think I'm too casual with some things and maybe too strict with others. I need a balance.

Continuing education is a good choice for refining and enhancing instructional style. Another method is to conduct mock teaching classes with peers. Teachers are assigned a lesson and deliver that lesson in a peer review environment. The method of evaluation involves an open frank discussion of style, mannerisms and technique with an aim to improve performance. It is not a hostile environment and is meant to be supportive.

Instructors need to review student feedback and most especially, student comments. Often times the student will let you know what is wrong with a classroom technique. Students will tell you what they need to be successful.

Welcome aboard!! i am actually new , i mean new in teaching in USA, i used to teach in Russia, but so far i can tell the big difference in teaching styles here and in Russia. Do not be afraid and nervous, well i take nevous part back : ), just be yourself and do what you do the best- TEACH, students will feel that and you will be amazed how your confidence actually helps them be confident as well.I wiil encourage you talk to your programm manager or who ever is in charge and asked them for help.
Good luck!!!

Hi Latoya,
Your instructional style will be a combination of a number of factors. Your personality, students you have, content you are teaching and the type of college you teach in. By looking at each of these elements you will see how you need to bring a particular type of teaching personality to the classroom to be most effective.

I know its helpful, but scary! How long have you been an instructor. Im new, I just started 3wks ago and I am so nervous bc I dont want to look incompetent, but all of this is new to me. I am on a 90 day probation period of course, afterwards I get an evaluation from the students and staff. This determines whether or not I stay on staff. This difficult part is that Im in the middle of the term with 4 classes, so I am so confused as to where everybody is right now. I do not have their syllabus or anything, just their handbook. Any advice

Taking feed back as constructive and work on week areas.

I think it is important be aware that sometimes we attend to teach in the style in which we learn best. An instructor who has studied with a great lecturer may feel lecturing is the only way to teach. However, this might not be the best instructional style for all of your students. Be aware that individuals vary greatly in their learning styles, and your goal is to take them from wherever they are to the next level of development. Learn to teach the students you have rather than the students you want to have. All students can succeed when their learning needs are addressed.

I never thought of that (having different instructional styles) . Im still trying to figure out what mine is,but Im glad you posted that. I was stuck on what type of style in particular would fit me and the thought never crossed my mind that I could have more than one. That makes it alot easier. Thanks
