allow students free thought and the oppurtunity to express themselves
I too need to learn names faster. I like using the name cards on their desk
I have also been told I am very animated. I saw it for myself recently on an instructional video I made. It surprised me actually!!
I like to get the students involved, and putting the information in as " real world" specific as I can, not just "text book". I feel it's important for them to understand there is more than just memorizing material out of a book.
I, too, am extremely animated and I include many professional experiences to demonstrate my application of courese principles.
Hi Roxanne,
I agree with you about the opportunities observations present in the area of professional development. We get to see different approaches, ideas and levels of creativity. The more chance we have to see others teach as well as be observed the more growth we experience.
Gary
My instructional style is very lively and hands-on.I employ a lot of story-telling and humor, feeling that all learning should be fun as well as useful!
I take a training approach to my classes, developing and implementing "tools" that are immediately applicable to real life and student life success.
I would like to further explore "thinking outside the box" instructional methodologies and tools.
I would like to observe other excpetional faculty and vidotape myself to observe my delivery.
I have been teaching at different types of higher education institutions and I would like to participate in mentoring oppotunities to become dea-level material. I love teaching but I have had only one observation in ten years and I thought it was incredible to receive input to improvemy skill.
Hi Dana,
I wish you much success in your teaching career. With your great attitude you are going to learn much and deliver high quality instruction. Keep it up.
Gary
Being that this is my first experience with teaching since the recieving of my MSN in an actual university, I will be a sponge and soak up all the knowledge and ideas of sucess that is avaliable to create a sucessful personal style that works for the Student, University, and myself. Thank you for all that is avaliable
I agree that reading surveys and evaluations from the students help my instructional style.
Cheryl
Online students have a diverse backgrounds. Many of them may have been away from college for months, even years. So when they come to the class, they may not be in the same learning level. Sure, they all have the prerequisite, but if that was taken a year or three before, how much are they prepared now? What I like to do is talk to the students and ask them about their experiences and how they feel about their preparedness. Based on this information, I then refine instructional style for that individual student and for the class in general. For ex. if I find some students lacking in preparation, I provide tutorials and review materials to get them started.
Like most, I also use the surveys at the end of the course to develop and enhance my instructional style. For ex. I started to speak more slowly as I found students indicating that I speak too fast.
Hi Kimberly,
You are in a great situation as a new instructor. You can develop your expertise and grow in your skills while benefiting your students.
Gary
Hi Seth,
This experience is going to provide you with a variety of styles and learning opportunities. Take in what you see and then internalize it to your own teaching style.
Gary
As a new instructor, I want to know what works for the students. What do they like about my current teaching style? What do they not like? To access this information I encourage the students to partake in the surveys. I also like to ask them during our chat sessions.
Teaching online offers many opportunities to refine my instructional style. Since I am unable to physically see the students faces while teaching, I rely on their feedback. It seems that every session a student who has way more life experience than I, offers their own views and opinions on my style. It is that information that is so helpful.
Continous self-assessment and reflection on experience, course, students, and colleagues help develop and enhance instructional style.
Listen carefully to the students’ feedback and questions asked in class. Students will unknowingly demonstrate their learning style within the Q&A review. Observe my students body language when presenting new information. It has helped me to improve the length of time that I spend during lectures and the depth of information.
My supervisor has provided me with an opportunity, which I intend to take advantage of, to observe classes taught by a number of different seasoned instructors in my same program. I will be able to observe their intructional styles and identify methods and techniques that I like and want to incorporate into my own style.
I need to work on ways to memorize student names faster.
