How do you incourage a student that is limiting themself both in skill and the ability to learn a better way of doing things?

Make sure you are focused on your materials, practice skills, and take thorough notes. Interact with the other students within the class.

Not knowing all the details of what is holding the student back I can only offer some general suggestions. One, have the student do some activities that will enable him/her to have success. Give feedback in a supportive way for his/her efforts. Work at developing respect and trust with the student so he/she will want to work harder to do the work and "please" you which in turn builds self confidence.
