Motivating Students
What will inspire a student to be their best?
I like to show examples of what can be achieved with additional practice and also to show my own work. Providing instructional criticism on how things can be improves, as opposed to what is wrong, can be positive feedback in their development.
Hi Adreinne,
Good point. What are some strategies you use to keep the energy level up in your classroom?
Gary
In my experience the thing that works the best with keeping students motivated is to stay motivated yourself. Student frequently feed off the energy of the Instructor or presenter and if there is a dull, lifeless presentation the students have a tendency not to be as encouraged to do well as being in an environment where the Instructor is encouraging and inviting.
Hi David,
Your modeling what a successful professional should be like. Success in the classroom and lab and a vision of how their career goals can be obtained.

Find out about the students - ask them questions about what they like - watch their expressions - use your sensory acuity to see what piques their interest - then relate that information to the topic - also - have the student imagine their life in 2 or 3 years - how successful they are and what they are doing - ask them to tell you - what they imagine they're doing - what they imagine their ideal job and projects are - where it is - what their office looks like - and other details - what kind of accolades they are receiving - they get really excited!
