Leading by example

Leading as an instructor by example will be a challenging task to perform.
Do the people in the field of education have suggestion as to how to perform as a role model at all time.

Suzarie,
Thank you for these comments about integrity. Integrity has been defined by some as "what you do when no one is around" and I agree. You did the right thing and as a result you can expect the highest level of integrity from your students because you practice it in your own life. As nurses they need to know and uphold these standards for the sake of their patients and their profession. I commend you for your stance and wish you continued success as an educator of merit.

There are many ways to lead by example such as dress code and showing up to class on time. However, what is also important is leading by example when none of your students are around to see it. I am a stickler for integrity and I expect these attributes in future nurses. I am also a student myself. One day I was absent from class which would result in a 2 point deduction. On that day we had a guest lecturer and he reported that everyone was present. I have to admit that for a second I contemplated not pointing out his oversight as this would result in a 2-point deduction for me. Then I remember my own students and the standards that I demand from them and so I pointed out the error in my grade. It was not a difficult decision to make at all and I felt very good.

I think these are all great ideas and first hand experiences. I think that having guidelines set down gives the students perspectives from the professional side and that they need to be flexible in there actions.

Hi Claudia,
This is a great idea because then the importance of appropriate dress becomes critical if they are going to get to have the chance to wear professional dress(scrubs). If they don't know how to dress for the interview then they aren't going to get the chance to dress for the job.
Gary

I teach a mandatory class - Career Development to pending graduates. One of the requirements is professional dress, and because my students professional dress is scrubs, I ask that they demonstrate professional interview attire three times throught the term.

Leading by example can mean manny different things, dressing for success, starting class on time, role modeling behavoirs. You will benefit as an instructor by leading by example.

Hi Shane,
I am assuming that your college's strict dress code was created to keep the students focused on their studies and not what they are wearing. By having a common dress code the guess work is taken out of what to wear to the campus. On the other hand you make a good point about the students needing to be informed about how to see professional standards for themselves when they get out if the dress code is mandated. I would discuss with the students the reasons for the campus wide dress code and show them how that helps them develop as new professionals.
Gary

I agree with lead by example, with the professional attire, and being well groomed.

But everyone here at our school has a dress code and I mean everyone, I feel like if you have to have a stickly inforced dress code how can you say its by example?

I truly believe in leading by example. I think that you need to be professional and be the person you were meant to be. You can bring your personality in and still be professional. You do not know what kind of impact you have on a student no matter what age. People will be watching every move you make, so why not make it in good judgment.

It looks like I will have to visit church more often in order to become humble and lead by example :)

Hi Erie,
Based upon personal experience I also have a higher level of confidence in that health care provider if he/she is professional in their appearance and attitude. Good point.
Gary

As a healthcare professional, it is natural to lead by example. Patients respect heathcare providers who lead by example and are generally more compliant with their treatment regimes.

Hi Kerri,
Your last statement says it all. You have to practice what you preach. You may be the first person in that career area the students have met up close and personal. You are setting the standard by which they measure others in the field.
Gary

Well, like the title says, you lead by example. You have to come dressed the part. Dress appropriate and well groomed, uniform neat. Present yourself as a professional. Practice what you preach.
