Your instructional styles

I think it is important to notice that the way we present ourselves and the subject are should be consistent throught the course.

Although the style can change through the course, but it should be like a learning curve.

Hi Cheri,
"Reading" students is an essential skill that all instructors need to develop. Your point about this is an important heads up for all instructors especially those just starting their teaching careers. Thanks for sharing.
Gary

I assess the student's body language as they enter the classroom. What THEY are wearing, their personal hygiene, tells me a lot about where they are in their day and how much I might need to "amp" up a class in order to break through that humdrum.

I feel that it's important that the student also knows your Instructional style. The first day of class I have a discussion with the student on my instructional style. I like to start the day with an open discussion of the subject. This gives me the opportunity learn what they already know about the subject and how I will focus my lecture.

I completely agree with your points about how to conduct yourself as an instructor. Students can change the pace, attitude and outlook an any given day's lesson. It is important to be perceptive and to acknowledge areas that need improvement. One thing that instructors can always be in control of is his or her professional demeanor and class preparation. This consistency in planning prepares us more for the unexpected climate of a class, allowing us flexibility in instruction if a particular strategy is not working on a particular day. I always try to have much more prepared in the way of applicable activities so that my students remain as engaged as possible. Also, if I don't know an answer to a question (and it happens!), I make an effort to find the answer within a reasonable amount of time.

Hi Rosalva,
You make two very good points. Not only do we need to reflect professionalism in relation to our field but also in relation to the mission of our college. Well said.
Gary

I agree that the way you present yourself and the subject should be consistent all throughout the course, even if you start feeling more relaxed and at ease with your students. I also think that you should never lose focus of how your college wants you to reflect their mission and philosophy in your instructional style.
