Professional Growth
I find that all educators need to stay on top of their game plan by doing whatever it takes to become better prepared in the classroom. Whether it's taking these online courses or taking seminars through other professional organizations which makes us better prepared in our classroom.

Brian,
I agree that as instructors, we should continue to acquire professional development as a means to keep up with the changes that are needed to improve our classrooms.
As you know, each class brings a difference set of needs and circumstances, so we should be equipped to facilitate the classes to meet the learning objectives, as well as be able to motivate students to want to learn the material being presented.
I agree professional growth is extremely important. Keeping up with instructional styles is one way, in my field however, I find it as important to work outside of teaching to stay relevant in the field. Students respond well to seeing recent work done by myself and other professors.
Hi Craig,
There are a number of things you can do to enhance your professional development. Complete these online courses for one. Another would be to observe dynamic teachers in your school or other settings such as community colleges. Do a web search for instructional strategies. Keep a journal of how each class went and recommendations for improvement. Step back a observe the class dynamics and see how you can effectively interact with the students and then reflect how the interactions worked.
If you have any specific questions please let me know. I will be glad to help you in any way I can. I wish you the best in this your new profession.
Gary
Being a new technical instructor, what advice would have for me about my professional education and development?
As a design instructor it is vital that I stay up to date on what is happening in our field. Applications are constantly changing and evolving. Professional development really helps me stay current, and I can tell you first hand students appreciate the work.
Also, I find that it encourages life long learning, which is a big part of our institution. How can I ask students to be life long learners, and not display that behavior myself?
I truly believe that if we become stagnant with our training and no longer continue to grow then our classes will reflect that same sentiment. If we continuously continue to grow then our classes will only get better, and our students will benefit the rewards.
I strongly believe Professional Growth is key in your success towards the goals you set.
Hi Glenn,
Good point for all of us no matter how long we have taught. We have to stay current and fresh in our instruction.
