Personal lives and students
I am intrested in learning a little more about balancing staying professional as well as caring about the personal lives of students.
For example when a student approaches you about a troubled home life.
What is a good way to be their friend as well as to listen and stay professional
Hi Shawnie,
Good point and well put. Thanks for sharing with us.
Gary
I feel it is possible to stay professional as well as care about my students; however, it is very hard to stay objective when they are having problems. Society is so focused on staying in school and getting an education and it forces the instructors to be clouded in their judgment as well. We tend to lean towards telling the student whatever they want to hear in order to keep them in our classrooms. The last thing we want is for a student to drop out but there are times when an education may need to come at a later time. We as instructors need to be able to recognize that need for our students and care about them as a person instead of a "butt in our seats". If you can maintain that aspect, I believe you will have found the balance you need to be professional & still care by being realistic.
i listen for clues and then if the problem is bigger than the scope in which i feel i can offer guidance i refer the student to sources that can provide help. I never tell them explicitly what to do in any situation but provide insight on alternative solutions and let them choose the best on their own. it helps let them take responsibility and builds confidence in decision making on their part which could translate to other areas as well.
Hi Jennifer,
After listening to a student share what is going on with their lives you can refer them to the student services office or an appropriate service provider. Try to keep the students focused on what are the real problems that are causing them stress in relation to their college work. You don't want to become a venting site where they drag everything in lives to you and share it. A professional friend is someone that cares, will listen and help work toward a solution. By fulfilling this role you will earn the respect and rapport of your students.
