Following all the Rules
What if you follow all the rules: be professional, be prepared, and be engaging, and students sill don't respect or listen? Has this ever happened to anyone?
There will always be someone who fits the category. Alot of student just have have the professional back ground as others and dont know how to respect and are afraid to accept someone as a role model for fear of being let down. Those students usually need to most TLC, I find they are secretly craving discipline and education, but are fearful of the unknown, and believe they will fail, before they start.
Hi April,
When students don't respect the instructor nor the course content then there is a class management issue at work. Make sure to set out clearly what the course goals, expectations, requirements and policies are and how they will be enforced. Be organized and prepared to deliver your content. If you have to you can remove certain students from the class. They do not have the right to disrupt the learning of others. By dismissing some students you send a clear message that you are in charge and that you are going to conduct the class for those students that want to learn. As you move through these steps make sure you have the support of your administration because you don't want to be perceived as an instructor that can't handle students.
Gary
I seem to have some of the same problems stemming from past instructors and how they did things and all students talk to new students and tell them how so and so did this and that and don't understand why I do things differantly. How do you handle these situations I have tried over and over to explain that I am not so and so that I am my own person and I will get them the information they need to be successful in their field.
