Creating an exciting class

Hi, I have found myself getting too complacent with teaching the same material. I need to realize that this might be the 50th time I have taught the same material but for the students it is the first time they are seeing the material. I like to use current events to help the students relate to the material. It can be difficult to get students excited about accuonting. I try to express my love of accounting to the students though instruction.

I think that the best way to enhance the learning/teaching experience is to make sure I address specific concerns of a student. Something that may seem very remote to me is enough to cause a student anxiety. When I have efficiently addressed the 'little' thing in a timely, consistent and caring manner, they seem to get through the bigger things more easily. A follow up or question afterward usually suprises the student and helps ease things up, as well.

Hi Aimee,
Great approach to getting the students focused and engaged in the learning process. Students like variety and you are giving that to them through the music and art.
Gary

I have found that bringing in aspects of my "out-of-classroom" self creates excitement for the students and me. Incorporating art and music into my dental health lessons breaks the monotony and kicks the fun up several notches. After all, who doesn't like to have fun?

Hi George,
Student relationships are so important and they must be handled professionally just as you mentioned. This way the students will know they have someone that cares about their success.
Gary

I find this VERY important! Don't become their friend, but make sure the students know that you care.

I think that first and foremost, creating an exciting class comes with your interaction PRIOR to class start time. Greeting students by name, asking them questions and your enthusiam about them as true people and not a number helps.

Hi Caroline,
Great advice for all instructors. Bring into the classroom a level of excitement and enthusiasm and teaching will be much easier and engaging for everyone. This is true as you say no matter how many times you have taught the course.
Gary

I've heard that one of the best ways to not be boring is to not be bored. It can be difficult to stay excited about a topic after you've taught it a lot, so look for new resources, pictures, games to freshen it up :)
