how to make students retain what they learn

need more on how to have students retain what they have learned.not dump it after they learn it

I find that repetition is definately key also. Most of my students currently really need daily reminders of the material in order for them to retain it. I find that very few of my students actually have a photographic memory or hearing and instant memory of what is presented. My students, by the time they get into the next level of classes can recite what the main information was fromt he previous class(es).

You also might try finding out what learning styles exist in your classroom and in what ratio. I've found that many of our students already have analyzed their best learning styles and can provide that information when asked. Another way to find this out is to give them examples of learning strategies(hands-on practice, scenarios with small-group discussion, lecture with handouts, etc) and ask them which method appeals to them most. Of course, you probably will have students request methods in all the major styles (auditory, visual and so on), but you can get an idea of what to use most of the time and which teaching projects you can develop to answer the other needs.

I also try and use repetition. I try use a mixture of lecture, different power points to explain difficult material in more than one way, videotapes, and real life scenarios. I find that anyone can simply regurgitate what they cram for in a book, but if you discuss a real life situation that makes them apply what they learned. For instance one of my topics is Miranda warnings when being arrested. For a student to be able to tell me you have to be in custody and being interrogated before Miranda is required is easy. However, if you give them different real life situations where they have to be able to decide if someone is in custody and being interrogated, they seem to understand and remember the material better because it has been applied.

Hi Christine,
You make a very good point about how to use repetition as an effective learning tool. Yes, we need to repeat the content with the students but in different ways as you mention.
What are some of the ways that you do repetition with your students that has been effective?
Thanks in advance for you input on this.
Gary

repetition is key, but repeat the information in different ways. In class (lecture, powerpoint, writing papers, etc.), on quizzes, demonstrate on typodont, demonstrate on patient, tell the professor during the procedure, etc.

Hi Robin,
Not exactly sure what you are asking about content retention for students. If you will share a little more information I am sure we can come up with some strategies for you.
Thanks.
Gary
