The more concrete examples you can use to illustrate the concepts the greater the retention is going to be. I like the example you shared with us. It is easy to understand and one that we will retain after reading this.

I usually think of several ways to explain a teaching point in class. For example, in teaching how a neuron works, I draw a picture, describe an analogy that everyone should understand (like an electrical cord fitting into an outlet), and then have them show me they understand by using the teaching point in a new example.
