I believe that the best way to control the classroom is to establish rules from the first day of class and to not deviate from those rules. When students know what to expect and that you are going to hold them accountable for their action/inaction, they will respond accordingly.
Hi Alice,
You are on the right track with your efforts. Keep up the good work and confident attitude. This way you will able to maintain control of the class and keep moving your students toward their career goals.

The best way to keep control of your classroom is to not have any down time during class. If I let student's do workbook or read during class they tend to do other things.
Being assertive is important. What I find to be the most valuable asset that any instructor can have is confidence. If you are confident in yourself, your knowledge, and your skills then your students will be confident in you as well. I am a new instructor and have had few issues with classroom management as a whole (Though there are always a select few who test the limits) due to my confidence. If you are confident, organized, keeping your notes on preparation, and following your outlines I believe you will have a better chance at having a more controlled and comfortable atmosphere. Therefore resulting in a very well managed class.
I am a new instructor and sometimes find it hard to control my class. I have had to assert my leadership skills as well as parenting skills(even though they are adults). You have to be assertive and confident. It also might get out of control when the material is not enough to keep them busy-I am struggling with this. I have been trying to introduce different types of material to keep them occupied.
