What do students want to hear?

I teach in a school that targets people of lower socio-economic backgrounds and most of them have troubles I can not even imagine (abuse/poverty/etc). I come from a highly educated, and most importantly, loving background. They know I am so far from where they come from, but I try to show them I care. Any ideas?

Beth.. you totally described me and my situation. Some of my students ride the bus for 2 hours to get to school (I've never ridden a city bus). So I do feel disconnected at times. It's important to find middle-ground or things that we all relate to.

I agree totally, there are all type of learners you just have to adapt your teaching to meet the needs of the learner no matter what you background.

I think tht when a teacher gives the impression of being caring to under-previleged people who have not experienced this in their lives, they will very quickly start to really respect the teacher and that could be enough motivation for them to try to learn from him/her

I don't think that an instructor's background matters when it comes to teaching. I agree that your teaching techiques is what matters...no matter the type of student.

Beth, I have found that it does not matter where you were raised or how you were raised to teach all students. It has taken a great deal of practice to get me to this point. I teach everyone the same. Then, I add time to those that need mentoring, or tutoring, without other class members present. I also use several teaching techniques for all types of learners. It seems to me that most of the students are their to learn, and if you teach your subject well, they will respect you.

Beth,
Having taught in such situations for a number of years I can appreciate where you are in relation to supporting your students. I try to extend to them an understanding and humanity to they know I am there to help them succeed if they will put forth the effort. They appreciate the fact that I respect them for who they are and in term they respect me for the effort I put forth on their behalf.
