Give them early success. Have them do an in class assignment that is challenging yet can be accomplished by using their previous life experiences. Then discuss how they were able to be successful. This will build their self confidence and assure them they can be successful in the total course. Discuss with them how you will be there to help them accomplish the goals of the course if they are willing to put forth the effort. I like to bring a graduate in and have him/her tell their story so the students can start to see how they can be like that students. This greatly increases the motivation factor.
