How students react the first day of class

It is really strange to me how students react the first day of class even though they have already had you for class before.

All my students are usually nervous because its a new environment that they have to get use to again.

Roger,
I like this strategy. You are showing the new students how the course is going to operate and what kind of relationship you have with your students. This way everyone can get settled into the course quickly and start the learning process.

When beginning a new class involving new students with students I have had in the past, I like to interact with the previous students to help new students understand the interaction between the instructor and student. This helps the new students relax and feel more confident so they understand the benefit of classroom involvement.

It is interesting especially when the student is taking part 2 of the class and you were the part 1 instructor as well. I believe once they walk out the class, their brain goes way beyond a vacation but by the 2nd or 3rd class they are back. I do agree you should review everything-just incase they forgot.

I think that most students are excited about their accomplishments. It's like moving up on to a position on a job.

Returning students entered class with more ease compared to new students. We exchange greetings and it is nice seeing them again. I am glad to see student pass pre-requisites courses and move closer to graduation. When I discuss the syllabus the returning students do not write many side notes. I believe that they learned from the previous course that my syllabus is accurate and followed, or abided by. They know what to expect ~Susan Paxton

On the first day of class, I review all of the rules and have them sign off and acknowledge. This way I can remind them that they are aware of the rules.

it seems as if they are there for the school instead of being there for them

Lisa,
Yes, you do because it seems students have short memories so we need to keep reminding them of rules, and deadlines.

I know you still have to reinforce all the rules you expected during the first class.

Amanda,
Surprising isn't it? Guess they think you have changed from the previous class or something. I think students forget we are humans just like them with the same life issues that they face.
