As a new instructor, I believe the material in this course will be helpful in making me an effective instructor from the beginning.
Lourdes,
Thank you for these kind comments about the value of courses like this. The more professional development you can acquire the stronger your skill sets are going to be when it comes to teaching and student management.

Lourdes ,
Thank you for sharing your perspective on being a new instructor and how to work through your student challenges. You are showing them the value of your experience and course content by being a model for them to follow.

I wish I have had the chance to watch this course before I started teaching. This is very helpful, specially if on is a new instructor. I think it is to the best interest of the institution as well as for the instructor to have these kind of courses offer prior to start teaching a course, even if one has teach before, these courses are a great review to the interaction with students.
I am also a new instructor, it has been very difficult to earn the respect of some students, but by showing that I am real, prepared for each lecture, and knoweldgable about the subject, and always open and ready to listen, I have found that it has made it easier to engage and receive respect from my students.
Having the knowledge and doing the research will show I have mastery of the material.
Jesus,
Use a variety of different activities like case studies, problem solving, and role playing. You can have guest speakers come in to reinforce what you are teaching them. Have them develop mini-presentations over certain topics, use games for review, and always bring passion for your topic into the class and you will be able to get them engaged.

Always treat your students as professionals. Address them in a professional manner, this modeling carries to your students and sets the expectations for communication in your classroom setting. Do not belittle or demonstrate sarcasm when they ask questions or make comments.Restate the question professionally and answer appropriately.
You get to start with a clean slate, and I think this class will really help you achieve the goal of being respected. Your students will respect you if you show that you are committed not only to being knowledgable about your subject, but also care about their success.
Mark,
Be organized and prepared. Dress and act professionally. Treat them with respect and in turn you will earn theirs. Be consistent in your polices and requirements. Show them your human side and that you are there to help them achieve their career goals. All of these items contribute to the earning of their respect and the development of rapport with them as the course progresses.
