Formal greetings for an adults classroom
I've been recruited to teach an advanced marketing class for people wanting to improve their skill set for advancement. These are working adults from the surrounding community. I'm not sure requesting that the class address me as "Mr." is appropriate but I'm open to comments and suggestions.
Anne,
I agree and in addition this helps them to realize the importance of titles and respect when they are in the work world. This is an important part of their career growth.

Adult students are still students and as such need to maintain the appropriate respect for their instructor. This is done with the use of titles such as Mr., Mrs, Professor or Doctor. The classroom is an area of learning and professionalism and titles are part of that learning process.

Nanette,
Good strategy for your school to follow early in the educational careers of the students. The more they understand how the work world operates the easier it is going to be for them to enter it. Knowing how to address those in authority is an important first step.

At my campus we have the students address us as Mr. or Miss this shows to levels of professionalism separating instructor from student
We are there mentors and there leaders not there buddies. Such as in the work force you do not address your upper level management on a first name basis
Cliff,
I wish you much success as you teach this course. I think it is going to be a good experience for everyone.

I appreciate the insight. I would not feel comfortable asking working adults to address me as Mr., and though I may possess unique information on a subject they're interested in learning, I think teaching on a first name basis is ideal. Thanks.
Cliff,
I think how you are addressed depends on the class and the students. As you have listed the course I would not have a problem at all being addressed by my first name as the course is specific to a skill set and the students are already practicing professionals. This is almost like a seminar that professionals would attend so the class climate will be different than a regular class.
