getting the point across
I feel as a new instructor I am not getting the point across on some of the material I am teaching. With note taking, board writing , video, hands on etc i still feel some are not getting it? HELP
I always find that taking the new information and connecting it to something they already know and understand will help with the understanding of the information and point you are trying to get across. use a situation or an event from the past to help them understand the new material.
Julie,
I would suggest that you use guided notes. Guided notes have the main points listed and highlighted with a specific set of sub-points listed under each main point. Then as you lecture through the main point and the following sub-points you have the students write down the sub-points. This way at the end of the lecture they have the key concepts listed. This is in addition and/or supportive to what you are already doing. Use case studies to have them apply what has just been covered. You can put them into teams of 3-4 students and have them do a case study and then report out on it. This way they are making application and seeing relevance to what has been covered.
If you wish to talk further about this please feel free to contact me. I wish you much success in your teaching career.
