ED 101

I am starting as a new instructor at a trade school. I just finished the ED 101 course and found a lot of the material very helpful and will put it to use. I am a younger teacher and may have students in my class that are much older than me. I'm worried that they won't take me seriously even though I know the subject matter very well and my knowledge in the industry will help them succeed. Any thoughts would be helpful!

Laura,
Your experience and dedication to student centered instruction has come through in shaping your instructional style. You have created a professional personna that serves both your students and yourself very well. Keep up the great work you are doing.

I only started teaching about 5 years ago and had no experience in the classroom.I have many years of experience in the medical field and thought I wouldn't be taken seriously either. I am a very motivated instructor with strong planning and leadership skills and find students to be very receptive and eager to learn from me. I built rapport with the students and got over that feeling quickly.

Tanya,
You make a very good point because the population of students within a general age range remains the same. We just move farther away from them until one day they hold a reception for us serve a cake and tell us not to come back anymore. That is called retirement.

When I started teaching I was yonger than most of my students. I do not know how did it happened- now I am older than most of there parents. That problem goes away quicker than you want.

Jarred,
Establish yourself as a well organized enthusiastic professional that knows your subject matter. By setting the stage for the class in a way that demonstrates that you are the learning leader you will do fine with all students, even those older than you. With confidence you will build rapport with the students and they will quickly forget the age factor. I wish you much teaching success.
