Can an instructor be successful in multiple roles

To be a successful educator, is it a good idea to be a life coach in addition to instructing the curriculum?

Lissa,
This is a good strategy to follow. This way you are providing support but not going into areas for which you are not qualified nor knowledgeable.

I think this is a tricky topic. Personally, I feel that there may be some liability risk if someone were to address personal issues with students during class times.
I know students have brought up personal dilemmas during class and encourage them to speak with career services/ academic advising.

Mary,
Thank you for sharing this comprehensive outline of what it takes to be an instructor of merit. You make a number of very good points about how we need to be learning leaders and conduct ourselves in a way that reflects well on our field and our professional reputations.

Yes, I think an instructor has to play multiple roles because it it almost mandatory when you are an instructor. Each student has a different insight when in the classroom setting. I am a role model for all of my students beacuse we as educator have to set the precedent for them. Most students are very critical when it comes to instructors. you have to be a manager in order to be successful in the classroom, basically have your game plan in motion before you enter the classroom because some students will try your patience and your knowledge, skills and abilities and as fas as motivation,I do this on a daily basis because most students don't have a very good support system, if they have any at all outside of the classroom. You have to be an all around multifaceted instructor. Always be prepared for any given problem, issue, or situation that you may have to face.

John,
It really is a good idea because a lot of the information you give in your course is going to be about life and how a person models behavior in relation to career success.
