Professionalism

I respect my students point of view, and opinions and I also use my personal experience.

Desmomd,
I agree about the need to hear the "real story" of the field. By having individuals come in from the field and is possible field trips to the field students will start to get a realistic picture of what they are preparing for.

Students really need to hear what goes on in the field because there is always misconceptions as to what happens on the job. Real world applications tend to address these issues so that the student understands that they are not just reading information out of a book. They must see how the information they read correlates to what they actually will be doing in thier professions.

Annshawn,
Good point and one we need to remember as instructors. By listening we are learning and growing just as are our students.

By using the students point of view, one can see a different persepctive. This also makes me, as an instructor, think about every aspect not just one. Also by sharing my experiences then teaches the students other ways to deal with a subject.

Jermaine,
You are right on both counts. We instructors need to set the tone as professionals and then walk the walk through our language, interaction and dress. We are setting the bar for our students and if we don't they won't have a standard to work toward.

I agree with active listening is a key component to be a succesful and productive teacher. I believe dressing in a professional manner shows the students that you take your Job seriously.

You should also if possible use their opions to help them learn by using them to support the material.

Janet,
I agree with them needing to hear stories about the real world that is ahead of them. The more reality they understand the easier their transition is going to be from classroom to workplace.

Maria,
How do you integrate all of these elements into your professional approach?

I will always listen to my students as well. I believe its important. I have alot of "real world" experince and I think it actually helps them to hear what happens out there.

Maria,

You are absolutely correct. My philosophy is...we can never have too much knowledge to learn something new. Instructors can learn a lot from their students.
