How to help a student wh really wants to graduate but is weak
Sometimes we have students in our class who are slow learners but they do want to participate. some how they cannot go for extra hours , in such cases what is the best method to solve their issue?
I agree, by pairing a student who is gifted with a slow learner helps the student feel more comfortable in the learning environment. In addition, the slow learner will also have a peer role model.
Tiffany,
Sounds like you have a very good plan for supporting your students that are experiencing challenges in the course. Knowing that they have an instructor that cares about them and their success goes a long way in encouraging them to put forth the needed effort.

In cases such as this, I find that reading and interpreting the information is a key issue. Most students here in Louisiana struggle immensely with the written word. I agree with you, handouts, or typed written notes breaking down the passages of a textbook prove to be very helpful. I also inform them that they are doing a great job at putting forth such effort. I make it a point to encourage their efforts as much as possible. In addition, I go over the material extensively to ensure that they understand the information.
I try to get some of top students to work with tem and this has been very helpful so far
Wendy,
Thank you for sharing this suggestion with us. This is a strategy I have used over the years with good success.

Sir,
Another suggestion that could possibly assist a slow learner, if they are recognized early enough: is to try and pair them with another student, who shows potential in helping others. Have study partners or groups in the class.
Irum,
Can you provide them with guided notes or supplemental handouts to study on their own time? Sometimes these types of supports are enough to help them keep up with the class. Does your school provide tutoring? The important point is that you can provide support but the students no matter their cognitive processing abilities must meet the standards for the course. If they don't they shouldn't pass the course and maybe be offered other career options by the college.
