Professionalism

I've been in my field for 22 years now. In the last ten years I've lectured in different arenas from the professional realm to the academic realm. The reality is at this stage most of the students, be it young adults or mature adults, have a drive to learn as they get out of the academic base and into the core of their degree.
There's a time in every class where as an instructor I can see the light bulb come on from student to student. At that point I turn on the motivation and drive to boost the passion level and remain focused on that diploma.
It's amazing how must more involved the student becomes at that point.

Rose Anne,
You have a wealth of knowledge and experience that establishes you as a model for your field. Through your efforts you are helping your students to make progress toward their career goals and be able to enter the field that you have enjoyed working in all these years. This is a great combination of experience and learning by both you and your students.

I have been in my profession for 40+ years. I try to show all my students how important being professional is in the classroom and workplace. I want them to take my instruction and carry it with them throughout their career.

I agree that you as an instructor, have to be motivated first in order to engage your students. It can be very challenging, especially if only a few of your students are inspired and want to be successful. I pray before each class and ask for wisdom and knowledge to guide my students in the direction that they need to go.

Greg,
This is what teaching should be about. You are enjoying your time sharing your knowledge and experience with the next generation of professionals entering your field.

You have hit on some key elements needed by instructors to engage students. Instructors need to have passion for their field and enthusiasm for teaching. This sets the stage for success for everyone.

To motivate your students, you must first be motivated yourself. That is a challenging task. However, as an instructor, I became more motivated as I motivated my students. You see a light bulb whereas I boost my energy level because of my passion for my students.

Sean,
Thank you for these comments as they reinforce the value of keeping the motivation level high for students because for most of them there is a time when they "turn the corner" and see the value of what is being taught and how they are on the home stretch of achieving their career training. This is one of the big returns we instructors get from teaching our classes and advising our students.
