Personal Experiences in the Classroom

How often should you use your past work experiences in the classroom to further a point?

Deb,
The use of personal stories and experiences increase the value of the course to students. They get to see both relevance and application to what is being taught so keep on sharing and engaging your students.

I have used personal experience in my course to show both positive and negative circumstances. When doing so, I also try to be entertaining to capture the attention of the students. This means not telling the same story every time. We all have a myriad of potential material to use.

Sharon,
Students love hearing these stories. They increase the value of the course content because you are showing them relevance and application through the stories.

I agree, sharing workplace experiences helps the students get excited about their career choices.

I believe you should incorporate them often. I think students enjoy hearing about personal experiences and it can also help them leaarn

Joseph,
Whenever the work experience fits into the topic that is being discussed. You are using your experience to reinforce, make relevant or apply content. Students like to hear these stories when they can directly connect them to the class. So share them with confidence and know you are helping to illustrate what you are teaching.
