Assess Prior Knowledge

What are some of the ways that you assess students' prior knowledge of a subject on the first day of class?

Cheryl,
I think you will like the results you get from this approach.

I like that suggestion! Although exams are not a part of the course, I can still use this concept as formative evaluation then give a post-test at the end of the term.

Thanks.

Cheryl,
Create a pretest that you can give your students at the first class meeting. You can make it as general or specific as you feel you need to to assess their knowledge as they come into the course. I give one and then we discuss the highlights of how they answered to give everyone a general idea of how the class will unfold in the weeks to come. Later I review their answers to give me more specific input so I will know how to customize my course to meet the needs of the class.
