Developing as an Instructor

First impressions are very important. And planning is key to a good first impression. As an instructor every day is a job interview.

Brandon,
Good way to put it because your impact on the class will set the tone for the upcoming course.

I agree and or in the same boat sir. My first day as a instructor will be my big job interview next semester.

Charles:

Dressing the part can make a huge difference; however we all have and make first impressions. According to Ybarra(2001, p.491)"forming evaluative impressions of others seems to be a very natural and inescapable process. People, when encountering others, appear to readily entertain the hypothesis what kind of person is she or he? or Is this person good or bad? A consistent finding from the impression formation literature is that of primacy effects, indicating that the preliminary basis of an impression perseveres and colors how subsequent information about a person is processed. This general finding appears to agree with people's lay theories regarding the importance of making a good first impression on others".

David,
Thank you for these kind words. Glad that the content was of help to you. I wish you continued success as you impact the lives of your students through all of your instructional efforts.

Thank you,

The 101 course helped to define new areas. I noticed, through this couse, things that I was and was not doing. Namely the daily org situation... often I find myself with less time, than needed, to org my day. I'll need to prep earlier and try to establish a total course structure (based around my teaching style and experience, with guidence from the set lesson plan) to help with this newly learned aspect

Thank you

Regards

David

David,
This is a great way to gain a lot of insight in a short period of time as you get settled into being an instructor. The key is to be on the lookout for strategies that you can use in your classroom and labs while you are gaining the needed experience of being a teacher. I wish you continued success with your professional development. You have a good start already.

As a new hire to a career college I have taken it upon myself to shadow other instructors, who are teaching the same class prior to mine. This is helping me get a "preview" of the course (which helps me understand the overall structure), as well as connecting with students and instructors. I have done this with my previous 2 classes and it has made my immersion into this new (repeat) environment easier. I highly recommend this process
