Instructor as Motivator
I believe that the instructor can set the stage for learning in the class room. While the instructor cannot make the come on time or put in prior preparation. The instructor can share their enthusiasm for a subject.
Rick,
This is a key point. We can and should be excited about what we are teaching but unless that student is personally invested in the process then little can be done to get him or her engaged. I see this in my classes and I am always amazed at their attitudes because not everyone gets the opportunity to go to a post secondary school. As the first in my family to graduate from high school as well as college I was excited that I could go to school and accomplish things that would make my family proud.

Agree. However, I had a student tell me recently that I did not motivate them. I can be as enthusiastic as I want to be, but their motivation must come from within. All I can do is encourage them and try to light that fire, but the actual motivation cannot come from me.
Barbara,
Good point. Bringing passion for your field to the classroom and then having enthusiasm for teaching about it goes a long way in generating excitement for students.

I strongly believe that you must absolutly do what you love othervise you run the risk of not motivating your students, you will bore them
