I believe the learning environment is key to the instructional process. My students range in age from late teens to early fiftys and need to have an environment which allow for learing in a controlled environment that will be fit for all for the most part. Many of the adult learners, that are in our classes today, need to have a learning environment in which the instructor can maintain control. This includes: allowing for interruptions of fellow classmates, keeping discussions on track and related to the subject matter, and still allowing students equal time for an exchange of ideas. The instructor must manage the environment in the classroom if the objective of the class is to be reached.

The instructor is about 80% of the learning enviroment. Only 20% come from the classroom and its organization. An instructor who is in complete tune with the students needs and is competent in addressing their needs, will always be more effective as compared to a "outwardly neat" environment with a faculty with less competence. An argument can be made as to a faculty who can create a neat environment is also competent, which I totally disagree.

The learning environment plays a big role. I struggle with this sense we have such a wide variety of students. The student range from 60- to 70-year-olds to kids fresh out of high school. The learning environment must be open to this vast generaltion break.

I find that I must have an extremely flexible environment to adapt to this. At times I need to be very structured, whereas other times I need to be more laid back, in order to have an evironment that is comfortable for all my students.

When teaching computer classes, which are mostly lab courses, I find that the generation gap presents a new difficulty for those who have very limited computer skills. I tend to spend most of my time with these students and often times neglect the other students.

I am constancly struggling to maintain a balance.

Hi Humberto,
Right you are. I always compare it to a 3 legged stool. It takes all three legs in order for the stool to be useful. For the students that we serve the three key elements have to be planned for and made a part of the total learning environment.

There are lot's of great books out there, but there is one that deals with all of this specifically " The Accelarated Learning Handbook" by Dave Meier. He discusses three key elements. The positive physical, emotional and social parts to the learning environment. I have expirinced that you realy need to have all three.

Hi Adarine,
You are right about having a learning environment that is conducive to instructional progress.
What are some methods you use to create a positive learning environment?
Gary

I believe the learning environment is very important for the students as well as the instructor. The function of the instructor is to ensure that each student is provided with an environment that is conducive to learning. For some of these adults the classroom is the only time their minds can be totally free to concentrate on their education.

Hi Shiv,
John Dewey stated it well back in 1911 when he said "students learn best by doing". You make a number of excellent points about retention of material based upon student involvement. Career colleges must incorporate this form of instruction into their methodology if they are going to be successful.

A visual learning environment makes for a more lasting impression than slick powerpoint presentation. Active involvement of a student helps them retain fundamental concepts longer. Students pick up small bits of information every single day if a science lecture is conducted in a lab setting. Bottom line if we can inspire the students to think innovatively and creatively we will have given them the confidence of recognizing that they each own a powerful tool - their very own logical reasoning skills. That can only come if they are allowed to play out or discuss their ideas in an interactive learning environment.

The learning enviroment is one of the most important things to look at for your course. If a student does not feel comfortable in your class they are going to shut down and not be open to new ideas. Also they will not be willing to participate in group disscutions or activities. Can you learn when you feel on edge?

As a leader, i believe every part learning is very important as long as i can provide to students clear direction to focus on the game or the course content.

Gary-

Without a learning environment that encourages engagement between students and the instructor, our students have been short-changed. Something as basic as classroom seating can have a large impact on how involved students become in the class. For example, I find it extremely important that all students in my class are able to see each other (no rows in my classroom). While I know that this is not always possible or even appropriate, my classroom seating (combined with an active teaching style)goes a long way in keeping students engaged in my classes.

Understand your students and their skill level. Deliver them to the point. Show them tips and tricks. Keep them informed about the job market and industrial requirements. If you are able to create their interest in the subject, I think this is big achievement in the learning environment.

I agree, and would add that its a good experience for them to meet challenges and to succede as a group. This is a good trait to encourage within the work force.

Hi Jessica,
Learning is an individual effort that is best supported by learning groups. You expressed it well with your words about relationships. They have to be created on all levels and it sounds like you are working very hard to develop them. Keep up the good work.
Gary

As the instructor, it is my responsibility to establish the proper atmosphere in the classroom. I strive to create a "we attitude." This means I think in terms of working with my students, together. This attitude helps to establish positive teacher-student relationships, student-student relationships and it fosters a supportive emotional climate. The classroom environment needs to be supportive of all persons so that students will learn to respect all other individuals and their ideas.

In my opinion, the learning environment is the central piece of the educational puzzle. If the student is uncomfortable, whether it be hot or cold, not enough light, or too close to other students, the effectiveness of the instructor in presenting subject matter will be hindered. It's not enough to be able to lecture on a topic with confidence and motivation, if the students' thoughts are on personal comfort issues rather than the material being offered.

Hi Monique,
Well said. It seems that many times instructors don't see the environment around them and as a result try and teach in a situation that is difficult for the student.
What do you look for in a learning environment that is positive for students?
Gary

The learning environment is the key component in an effective instructional process. Students must certainly feel comfortable in the learning environment. If the learning environment is chaotic, tense, haphazard, etc., then students respond accordingly. The learning environment sets the tone of the course.

Hi Elbert,
You made a number of excellent points. I can tell by your writing that you have a clear idea of what you want from your students and how you as a professional educator can contribute to their success. Keep up the good work. I know your students will benefit from your leadership.
