First day preparation

The mood for the class is set on the first day. I have found that if the students know what to expect, as the should, through a good presentation of the objectives of the course. The students participate more and over all accept what they are learning better if they know why they are learning it and what the methodology is going to be.

I could not agree more! Outstanding job!

the fisrt day will determine the rest of the phase

To set the tone on day one, makes the rest of the phase go much easier.

I begin my first day preparation on the week before the course begins. I am sure all the needed materials and supplies are in place. My lab has to be in good shape and all my half cars filled with fuel. A student realizes quickly if the class is in a shamble.

I agree with Daniel. The first day sets the tone for the course and if you seem unsure of yourself and disorganized on the first day, you have lost all credibility with the students.

If we make the students aware of what is going to be required of them on the first day, then they will follow the path of the course with open eyes, knowing what to expect for the course and the instructor. Otherwise, it's going to be hard for them to follow and even harder for us to lead them throughout the term.

I agree! the students must know what the course will require of them and what you expectations you have from day one.

I strongly agree with Ben and Mike. The first day prep will make or break some instructors credibility, especially a new instructor. Always keep in mind the old saying, "You only get one chance to make a great first impression".

We as instructors need to set the tone day one. one thing I feel is impotant is heavily emphasize my expectations of them especially the youger students.
