LEARNING ENVIRONMENT IS ESSENTIAL WHEN IT COMES TO THE INSTRUCTIONAL PROCESS. MAKING SURE YOUR LESSON PLAN IS LAYED OUT SO STUDENTS CAN FOLLOW IT CLEARLY AND THAT INSTUCTIONS ARE CLEAR AND TO THE POINT.ALSO MAKING SURE ALL STUDENTS ARE PARTICPATING AND HAVEING THERE OWN CLASSES ON THE SIDE. LEARNING ENVIORNMENT CAN BE MAXIMIZED BY LAYING OUT ALL CLASS RULES , SHOWING STUDENTS WHERE ALL SUPPLIES ARE TO BE FOUND AND CLEARLY OUT LINEING LESSON AND OUR PROJECTS TO BE COMPLETED ALONG WITH TIME REQUIERMENTS.
The learning environment plays a pivotal role. If there is an organized environment that is conducive to learning, it can make the student ready to learn. If it is disorganized, the student reflects that environment right off the bat... and of course, the environment reflects on the instructor.
I feel the more conducive the environment is to learning the easier it is for the student to learn.
The teacher can create physical environment conducive to learning by: 1. Arrange the romm to facilitate positive classroom interactions. 2. Arrange and adapt classroom seating to accommodate individual and grup learning needs.3. create a classroom environment that reflects and promotes student learning- adequate lighting, comfortable room temperature.
It is really important for entry level health care personal to develop professionalism to succeed in their careers.
Patience above all!!!
Hi Paul,
A positive learning environment is important for catching the interest and attention of students just as you mention. By using color and vivid displays of tools, equipment or role models for the career area you are setting the stage for the students as they start the new class. It is important to capture their attention so an inviting classroom with a well prepared instructor will do much to make learning happen.
Gary
I think the classroom sould be inviting to the student. pictures of the subject matter sould be in plain veiw. if the student is relaxed and the room is visualy stimulating it wake the brain up. my class room has pictures on the walls that are done in brite colors. most classrooms i have been in are white or gray its kind of drab and puts me to sleep. give the students somethig to look at. if the classroom is drab i encourage the students to draw while i lecture if they can do both.
The learning environment can motivate the student to learn based on the instructor organization of the coursework. Simple summary discussions. mini group sessions and visual presentations can stimulate this process.
Hi Ken,
Thanks for sharing your student grouping and arrangements with us through the forum. I am sure this information will be of much benefit to others.
I commend you for your organization of multi-level students. This is always challenging for instructors.
Gary
Gary,
In addition to grouping students and encouraging them to work in a collective effort the next most successful item is, that I have been able to find textbooks that are formatted in a tutorial style. This is a great offset to the negative aspect of not being able to do a lot of lecturing since the classroom has a number of student groups working at all levels of course curriculum.
An added plus in this setting, is observing the more advanced students standout as leaders in their respective groups. Some even offer help to others outside their own sections. I encourage this activity because in the correct setting it is indeed a true and valued learning experience.
Hi Ken,
Your teaching setting is one that does require some creative ideas about how to reach all students. What has been some successful techniques you have used to meet the individual diverse needs of your students?
Gary
All these suggestions have stimulated me to look for ways to keep my students interest, like walking around, bringing in elements that relate to the subject, etc. Although I like for my students to be generally comfortable, ie; light, seating, room temperature, if they get too comfortable they don't pay attention to the subject! As young adults they get bored easily, and it is always good to look for new ways to keep it fresh!
The environment that I teach in is one that involves a group of students that are, at any point in time, active in 2 or more different modules and all in the same classroom/lab that will be occupied by another instructor. This presents a rather unique teaching challange and I have found that grouping students according their respective module and encouraging them to interact with each other is benificial to the learning exoerience. This is far from an ideal situation; however, I have learned to adapt to it effectively.
It plays a very important role in that if you keep your lectures and demonstrations to minimum of 15-20 minutes your students are able to retain more information. We as instructors need to find how our students learn, whether it is visual or by readind and adapt.
Hi Glenda,
Variety and pacing are two key ingredients for reaching younger students. You have a very clear idea of how that is to be done and I know your students will be able stay engaged and focused on their learning with this approach.
Gary
Exactly! The majortiy of the younger students are used to being in an entertainment type mode through gaming and constant electronic interaction. The material can be presented in ways that are engaging and fun. I have found rention is better on difficult material when vocabulary games are played in teams for points. There is less learning in a borring lecture.
Both of you are setting the stage for what I feel is the most important part learning through student interaction. Seeing each others faces will more likely motivate participation. They are less likely to slouch down on their elbows behind the back of the person in front of them because the entire group would take notice.
The learning environment plays a big role there needs to be order, and a comfortable area to learn and open up. Traininf aids really help if i can explain something and show pictures and also pass a real live example around it helps me reach all learning styles.
Hi Patrick,
Personal praise for doing something well is so powerful for students. Those marginal students that may be ready to quit will thrive on praise once they realize that you really do want them to succeed. Through instructional support and personal encouragement you will have a major impact on their lives and career future.
Gary
Hi Mary,
As the old saying goes "the only constant is change" and in teaching this is really true. You make a number of very good points about being flexible. You have to be or much of your teaching time is going to be working through frustrations that continually crop up. Keep up the good work.
Gary
The role of an instructor is to bring the students to success.
