Clean and orderly is important.

Hi Kyle,
You cite a good example of how the class setting can help the instructional process. This arrangement keeps all of the students in the loop in terms of discussion and sharing.
Gary

Hi Roberto,
You make a good point about how an instructor has to see the entire picture as it relates to instructional planning. This includes not the physical setting but the media and content as well.
Gary

Our classrooms are arraigned with the students in a “U” shape, I think this enhances learning by a more interactive atmosphere. It allows me to interact with students more, and encourages group discussions. It also lessons the “hide” effect of students in the back of the class – now there is no “Back”! I often find students interacting with each other more expanding the point of the matter.

The learning environment plays an important role in the instructional process. In order to maximize such process, the learning site must meet learning standards such as confortness for students which will allow them to focus on the course content. A good example entails having audiovisual materials for class presentations accompany with the appropiate elements for laboratory practice as well.

i feel that the learning environment should be open and positive. makes learning enjoyable.

I think that class size plays a major role in the classroom environment, especially in a vocational school.

Use of audiovisual aids

Hi Gary,
A key part of learning is understanding relevancy between what is being taught and what is being learned. This is why student understanding of why they are being prepared for lab is so important.
Gary

When you prep a student for labs this helps them to tie the class learning together

Positive and comfortable learning environment play vital role in the instructional process. You can maximize the instructional process more effective by creating positive learning environment which can help students to concentrate in class room activity by rearranging class room furniture according to students need, appropriate lightening and classroom temperature.

The learnig enviorment is very important, I find it is critical to surround myself with an enviorment that supports the curriculum. Having trainiing aids to let my students see first hand is invaluable to the students.

Hi Dan,
Good organizational plan for your class. It gives your students more opportunities to interact with each other and yourself. Plus, the benefits of them seeing how a lab can be set up.
Gary

I do what is possible to make sure the students are comfortable while avoiding an overly relaxed atmosphere.

The clinical lab available for use is not that large so I divide the class into two sections. While one is practicing in the clinical lab the other is praticing soft skills. This has proven to be a benefit to all students, more one-on-one in a clinical setting and the development of administrative skills.

The learning enviornment plays a vital role in the instructional process. For example the posters on my walls help stimulate the learning process for my students. Each poster represents some type of diagnosis or pathological disease. I feel these posters lead to alot of good questions and help the students get motivated to what they are going to learn about in the medical field. Some of the ways a learning enviornment can be adapted to maximize the leatning process would be to have proper seating for group discussions. We need to make sure there is plenty of room to walk up and down and side to side to maintain attention and promote class participation during lectures. These are just to name a few.

Hi David,
Well said. I know your students benefit from the fact that they know that you care about their success in your class.
Gary

Thank you. I also maintain that comfort has a line, in that we still have to maintain our Instructor/student boundaries. To be their Instructor properly we have to ease their minds and reduce their stress about being in class again. Some of our students have not been in a class for a number of years and it can be stressful to come back to class. i try my best to assure them that they will be fine and I am here everyday if they need help, my door is open for them when needed. That is what I feel is most important to helping the students maximize their ecucation.

Hi David,
If you always keep the thought as outlined in the last line of your forum response you are going to do well as an instructor. Make the student feel welcomed and comfortable in the learning setting, establish good rapport with them and they will work hard to succeed in your course.
Gary

Hi Patricia,
Right you are about the learning environment. It is amazing to me how many schools try to teach a subject without the lab or setting to illustrate to the students just what they are going to face in the future or what they are going to be learning on.
Gary

The learning environment is critical to any and all learning. If the environment is not condusive to learning then very little learning will be achieved by your class. It needs to be comfortable, relaxed and interesting. If you go into an environment for learning that is cold and unfriendly, the students will not relax, without relaxation very little learning takes place. Invite feedback on the first day from your students as to what they feel the room is to them. Ask them if they fel they can learn in such an environment, that way they feel that they had some input into where they are going to be for the rest of the term. Making them comfortable within their environment is the biggest key for me as an instructor.
