Positive Environment
One thing I have started doing in class is posting motivational quotes and a brief message every few weeks. In classes I have taught several times, I make sure I post a quote and personalized message to the class after particularly tough assignments in order to keep morale high.
The reaction has been incredible! Students not only respond by telling me that the message was right on time, but I have also noticed that they have started posting positive and encouraging words to each other in student forums.
What other methods have you used to really boost morale and create a learning environment where students can thrive?
I also want to promote positive environment in class by posting encouraging and inspirational quotes because it will motivate students and help them focus on their career goals.
I like to acknowledge a student as I catch him / her doing something good. Each student has a contribution to make and each in their own way has something positive to offer. I use direct positive reinforcement sparingly, but sincerely and I make sure that I have found ample opportunity to compliment each student in a personal, meaningful way.
Hi Jaynelle,
I will at times pause with the class to have a break where we just have some fun. I watch to make sure we don't take too much time away from class but it may be at the end of a phase or when I notice the students wearing down. This is most common about 3/4 through the course. I will organize them into competitive teams and we have a tournament with food being prizes such as pizza. I pay for it and the students like that as well. My point is along with the great job you are doing with your inspirational messages I add an element of humor and fun that gives the students learning breaks but still keeps them focused on the class. This really helps me develop rapport with them and that keeps them motivated as well.
