Being Prepaired

Mise en Place is life. You can't teach it if you don't do it!

Hi Sharon,
Good point. That is why planning and organizing are so important for teaching success as well as providing a model for students to follow in their career.
Gary

As a teacher you have to set the example. If you are well prepared and organized you can instill in your students that this is what will be expected of them.

Regarding Preparation:
I find that the more you are prepared as an instructor, the more the students will respect your time and ability to organize the class into a learning environment.

Hi Jacqueline,
Well said in terms of being prepared. Professional educators are not only experts in their field but also prepared to be share that expertise each time they step into the classroom.
Gary

The class I teach is also my field of expertise, but although I go out into the working world and come and teach this class and bring my expertise into the classroom, that is still not enough. I still have to be prepared for the day with the right materials and class assignments, I have to have the appropriate level of learning and be on time, if I don't I am off balance and I'm sure my students notice and therefore, I feel I make them off balance. I am a trained professional, but beig prepared speaks volumes.

I could not agree more. As an instructor if you are not ready to teach the class then are in the wrong profession. Being prepared and organized is a huge lesson for us alone. If we don't plan it we can't teach it either.

Hi Graham,
You make a good point. What is one of the effective ways you have found to help you students see that you are living it day by day?
Gary

I have found that not only living out the term mise en place is essential to effective classroom delivery, it is important to both instill that idea and make the students understand why we live it day to day. This will be a key factor in the development of the student both personally and professionally.

i like this concept. i used it while i was in graduate school as a student and found it very useful. i plan to introduce it to my students

Hi Kelvin,
One thing we have done with good results is to print up notebooks with symbols and blanks that the students need to write down as we are going through the lesson or demonstration. By having the symbols and blanks they know there are 6 things they have to get written down since there are 6 blanks. So if they miss one they ask about it immediately and we don't have to go back to it at a later date.
Gary

Yes you should always have your mise en place in line then double check it. It makes life easier and your relaxed an then the class will go smoother.

Everything in it's place. Well said, Christopher, I spend a ton of time teaching this concept and can't think of how I would teach with out doing it. I require all students to have a small notebook in their pockets to take notes and make lists that they can check off. I work in a fast paced environment where asking the same question because you didn't write the answer down is not smiled upon. Any pointers on how to get students to write down information they need to remember?
