First class meeting

What technique do you use to break the ice when you meet your students for the first meeting?

I have the students to introduce themselves and tell the whole class why did they pick this field of study? The reason for that why I do that because everybody is nervous and i find out that we all have something in common and I think it's a great icebreaker.

This is what I use on the first day workes great

Hi Niki,
I use and like this game as well. It is a lot of fun and a very valuable learning tool for the students. As you know they really get into the competition of the game.

I have the students introduce themselves and talk a little about their interests and hobbies. Then I talk about the course. We usually end the class with a game of family feud (if the class is small enough) with general questions about the topic. Most of the questions are basic and easy. It usually breaks the ice. the students are more comfortable with each other and talking in class.

i ask who in the room is nervous... and then I make a big deal about waving my hand in the air right along with them... it seems to put them at ease and relax a bit knowing they are not alone in being nervous... then i try to make them laugh by poking a little fun at myself...

I had the students interview each other and then introduce their classmate to the class.

On the first day,I go around the room and have each student introduce themselves. I ask that they state their name, hometown, hobbies and why they chose this career. Last, I briefly tell them a little about myself and my career. This helps break the ice for the first day.

I have them introduce themselves and then tell me about their favorite type of music, place to eat, hobby etc. This helps other students be able to approach each other who share similar interests. It also helps me to form a memory peg to by associating a name to a event or item.

I introduce myself. Then, I ask students to form groups of three. I will give them five minutes to talk among themselves. During the conversation, each student must find out something secretive about one studentin the group on a certain question that I will pose at the onset and share this information with the class.

Mario,
I agree that addressing students by name is very effective to narrow the instructor Vs student gap creating the right atmosphere for trustful discussions.

outstanding way too break the ice

i play the name game. I go down the class and memorize every students name.

Hi Samson,
I have the students introduce themselves and tell the class why they are in the career field. I also have them do an activity that lets them experience a sample of the field to get them excited about the upcoming course.
