First day of class!

I think introduction is very important in first day of class. Getting to know each other, espcially knowing students would help instructor to set the tone and create the right learning environment. Anwar

The first day, of the first class, I will be instructing is approaching this Monday. I am anxiously excited about the start of the class because, I know it sets the tone for the next three weeks. All of your tips are stored in my memory for the experience. Stay tuned!

Hi Elinore,
Well said and so true. We need to remember this each time we start a new class.
Gary

I believe you should be the first person to class, greet the students with a warm smile, introduce yourself...and let the students know that you are a team and all have the same goal. You wont leave anyone behind...be enthusiastic, build trust, get to know the students..and have them get comfortable with eachother. First impressions go a long way!

I really like the idea of using a short and simple ice-breaking activity on the first day of class? Are the any suggestions on a good one to use?

I agree that the first day is very important. This lets the students know what is expected of them and gives you the time to set the rules and guidelines.

I think it is very important to the student to get a better sence of what type of instructor you are and what might be your expectations, and also break the ice a little so that they do not feel so intimidated and will be able to comfortably ask questions when they do not understand.

You have to remember the instructor and the student are both nervous!! Make it as inviting as possible for the student.

It is so important to start class out with your best foot forward. Instead of flying directly into the course work building rapport with the students and building your credibility is important. This is the foundation which future classes build upon. I feel taking a few minutes having a relaxed conversation helps calm the nerves of both the students and myself.

I agree with you Anwar. I would introduce my self and give them a brief history of myself and expectations. I think this is how I set my tone for my classroom.

I agree with Anwar's suggestion to have everyone introduce themselves as a way of getting to know each other. I also believe that the student should not only introduce themselves, but to give the class a little background on what their goals and what they hope to accomplish. Barbara

Hi,
I think the instructor should explain what degrees or certfications, years of experience and what specialty the instructor is experienced in. This way the students will be able to find out about the instructors credentials.

Hi Tamara,
That first day is the foundation from which the course is built. It sets the tone for the entire course phase. Instructors need to be well prepared and organized so they can show the students that they are going to be consistent in their application of the polices of the course.

I agree, I have also found that if you start out being strict (my expectations of the students)it is much easier to lighten up; verses doing it in an opposite approach. The first day of class is the day the instructor has to set the stage/tone of the entire learning experience.

I believe a good introduction is critical. I think it is important to set a welcoming tone for your students. This will set them at ease and improve their learning outcomes.

It is also important that we set the expectation and what is required for each students to be succesful.

I agree. I think the first day of class the instructor will know the direction to take the class and the students will know that the class will be a good fit. I think by making introductions an instructor will be able to see where each student is at as it relates to the course. And, as Anwar said, it will create the tone for the entire course. ~Jen

Hi Toni,
Good point about how to start a new class. What kinds of ice breakers have really worked for you?
Gary

The first day of any class sets the tone. An instructor should greet students with enthusiasm, warmth and establish a "safe" zone. Introductions are important and I like some kind of ice-breaker activity.
Toni

Hi Robyn,
Good point. The simple act of being there early and greeting them by name really sets the tone for the class that day. It shows you care about their success each time the class meets.
