Classroom Environment

I teach computer classes and need to constantly walk around and make sure that students aren't working on their computers vs. listening to the instruction. I wonder if others have different techniques or can someone tell me how to turn off the monitors at appropriate times?

Hi Kenneth,
As texting is a common problem in classrooms I appreciate you sharing how you are connection the writing of text messages with the writing of professional content. By showing the students both sides of the communication process you are creating a connection for students. Good job!

I have similar issues getting students to write rather than text during sessions. When I assign them to write a paragraph, I usually walk around to make sure that is indeed what they are doing. Many times I see them texting under the desk rather than composing. I use these moments as opportunities to get students talking about why they don't want to write the paragraph, but are happy to "write" a conversation via texting.

I don't teach computer classes but you will still need to check on students who find other projects to work on while you will be lecturing. Some times complete silence works. they will all look up :)

Hi Brenda,
For fixed station teaching it is best to remain in the front while delivering content, for the reasons you stated. You can move side to side in front which lets the students redirect their gaze a bit, which also lets them refocus their minds. You can move through the lab once the students start to work on their individual assignments.

I haven't taught a computer course in a while but as I was reading your comments, I thought, what if you taught from the side of the room and the students had to turn their heads/chairs while you were talking and then return to the front when you are done - to work on what you discussed - or put the knowledge into practice? Side, back... any direction except the way the screen is facing them. What do you think?

In that case, I would acknowledge that I am aware that some students are attending to personal material on their computers and request that it stop, or have the computers turned off or not taken out during class. Counting on them having a personal sense of responsibility, I would assume they would stop. BUT if I continued to see them working on other things, I would mandate NO COMPUTERS in class.

Hi Lisa,

Yes, it's interesting that some students have no idea that you know that they are working on facebook or something else. It would be nice to have a button that would shut the computers off while you are lecturing and then you can turn them on when the student needs to use them.

Hi Michael

I've taught computer courses and it's common to conduct walk through s throughout your class. How else could your monitor their learning behavior,
