Planning is Important
Planning for me is so important. I love to have something new and fresh for the students. I love having them find and discuss current events, I feel this gets everyone's brain working.
Hi Madeleine,
What I do when I am teaching heavy loads like the one you mentioned it to make up a course outline with key topics listed. Then I review those topics so I am up to speed because I have the background content to fill in the topics as we move through the course. This method helps me to stay current and not miss any critical points.

I always read and reread the topics even though I have presented them several times in the past.
I read updates of them prior to presentation. Many times it is hard to do so especially if one has 5 subjects to teach every 4 - 6 weeks. Any suggestions?
make sure my students know day and time for tests.
I feel it is very important to plan my class lectures to coordinate with clinical sites because of hospital time management.
I enjoy planning for my students the night before! I love using small group discussion as a means to help students get to know each other. This method is not always useful when its a large class.
Hi Dina,
Welcome to teaching. I wish you much success with your students. By analyzing how you learn and then expanding that to your students you are going to be able to reach a wider variety of learning preferences in your students. This will enhance the effectiveness of your teaching.

Hi, My name is Dina and I am a new instructor at a vocational school teaching Phlebotomy. I am a visual learner and need multiple methods of delivery to absorb information. So I think I will make sure that I deliver the content in a variety of ways for students individual needs. :)
I tend to be the type that plans things out thoroughly, so hopefully I will apply this to the classroom setting. When conducting training sessions in my professional career, I would usually make a list of various items that I needed to cover and often write that on the white board for everyone to see.
I totally agree. I do plan!!! Doing that help me to know what is coming and I do not get lost
I try to read well in advance of the class the material that is to be presented and then think about various ways that I can grab the attention of the student. An example is when I was instructing on the id, ego and superego. I found a wonderful video set to upbeat appropriate music for each of the categories. I let them watch the video and then discussed the topics. I try to tie in videos and articles where they seem to fit best. I even used a movie trailer (The Predator) that fit well with one of my topics. This generation of student seems to interact very well with props.
Hi Sigalit,
What are some of your most effective planning strategies? We instructors are always looking for additional ways we can better plan and organize our instructional delivery.
Thanks for sharing with us.
