Planning and Preparing before a lecture is vital for the teacher as it shows reliability and dedication towards education.

Hi Toshia,
Good question and for me not one that has an easy answer. Part of the answer depends on the subject you are teaching and your instructional delivery preference.
If you are using a straight lecture approach to gather the resources, prepare the visuals, handouts and content you would spend around 3 hours for every hour of lecture. If you use discussion and small groups along with case studies you would spend less time on the content planning because you would be guiding the students through the content but they would be contributing to the class.
I would suggest that you might want to try different approaches to see which will work best for you, your students and your planning time.
As for planning a lecture you need to create an outline of the entire course and then break the content down into segments that will be presented each time the class meets. Then outline the topic so it will fit within the time frame of the class and you will have developed a guide for yourself that will enable you to develop your lecture.
If you have any additional questions please let me know. I will be glad to help you with your lecture development.

I agree. How do you go about planning a lecture? I only teach part time on top of that I have another job and 3 kids that keep me going. So about how long does it take you to plan for a lecture?

Hi Rafiqul,
Right you are about the need for planning so the instructor can better deliver the course content. What are some ways you prepare your content for delivery that will engage your students?
Thanks.
Gary
